The Accra Regional Police Command has apprehended a 30-year-old woman, Mavis Nkrumah, for allegedly launching a brutal acid attack on her former boyfriend, Gideon Frimpong, in what authorities describe as a premeditated act of revenge.
The incident occurred in the early hours of May 28, 2025, at Ofankor 7 Days Stretch, after Mavis unexpectedly showed up at Gideon’s home in Ablekuma Fan Milk around 1:00 a.m. and requested a ride to her destination.
According to police reports, Gideon, a 29-year-old taxi driver, agreed to drive her. However, during the trip, he asked her to disembark due to poor road conditions ahead. It was at that moment—following a tense conversation about their ended relationship—that Mavis allegedly doused him with a liquid believed to be acid.
Local residents who came to Gideon’s aid quickly transported him to a medical facility. He was treated for chemical burns and has since been discharged.
Meanwhile, the suspect fled the scene and reportedly crossed into a neighbouring country. Her arrest on June 3, 2025, brings a dramatic turn to what police say is a case of extreme emotional retaliation. Mavis is now in custody and assisting with ongoing investigations.
In a press statement signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs, the police condemned the act and urged the public to resolve disputes through lawful means.
“Violence is a crime and will not be tolerated,” the statement emphasized, adding that the Command remains dedicated to public safety and encourages the timely reporting of suspicious behaviour.
