On January 7, 2025, His Excellency John Dramani was sworn into office and has thus officially assumed office as President of Ghana.
As a result, there are certain key persons or appointees of the former government whose official duties automatically came to an end from that very day.
According to the Schedule and Section 14 of the Presidential (Transition) Act, 2012 (Act 845), the affected office holders are;
1. Persons holding office under the Presidential Office Act, 1993(Act 463)
2. Ministers and Deputy Ministers of State
3. Regional and Deputy Ministers of State
4. Special Assistants, Special Aides to the President, to the Vice President, and the Ministers of State, Deputy Ministers, Regional Ministers, and Deputy Regional Ministers.
5. Non-career Ambassadors and High Commissioners.
6. Persons appointed by the Former President or a Minister of State as members of Statutory Boards and Corporations.
These office holders are thereby required to be paid their relevant retirement benefits and the enjoyment of facilities as provided by law.
However, the public officers who are not specified above will continue to hold office subject to Articles 190,191 and 199 of the Constitution.
For the Presidential Estates Unit whose functions include among others, the keeping and taking of an inventory of the assets and properties of the Government, the State Protocol Division of the Civil Service is required to perform this function until the appointment of an adminsitor-General to oversee that.
Additionally, the new President is mandated by law to appoint persons to be in charge of relevant ministries before the assumption of office of the incoming Minister but such temporary appointees are not required to make any decisions involving a policy issue except the Solicitor-General when in charge of the Ministry of Justice.
