Pastor accused of stealing from deceased friend granted GH¢150k bail

A 38-year-old preacher, Wisdom Kwame Adu—also known as Agya—has been granted bail of GH¢150,000 by the court, following allegations that he stole from a late friend. The bail includes two sureties, one of which must be backed by landed property. Adu pleaded not guilty to charges of theft.

The prosecution, led by ASP Issah Achiburi, alleges that Adu misappropriated a Range Rover, an ATM card, and cash amounting to GH¢27,000 belonging to his deceased friend, Emmanuel Offei. The court has ordered Adu to return on July 14, 2025, for further proceedings.

Offei, who lived in Akropong Akuapem, was reportedly a close friend of Adu, a pastor residing in Korleyman near Medea. According to the facts presented, Offei discharged himself from the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital on April 30. A month later, on May 26, the two travelled to Kumasi “for prayers.”

Tragically, Offei died on June 5 on church premises. Adu informed the family of the death and handed over Offei’s phone to the deceased's brother, Samuel Awuku Darko, who is the complainant in the case.

However, Adu allegedly withheld Offei’s Range Rover and secretly kept his Ecobank ATM card. Between June 8 and 10, several withdrawals totaling GH¢27,000 were traced to Kumasi and Pokuase-Amasaman.

The complainant reported the suspicious activity to CID Headquarters after receiving transaction alerts. Adu was arrested on June 17 at his rented residence, where officers retrieved GH¢35,356 and £40 during a search.

Meanwhile, Offei’s body remains at a private mortuary in Tinkong pending an autopsy. Police say investigations are still underway.
