Seven people have been sent to prison by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Sanitation Court after they were convicted of open defecation and could not pay the fine imposed.

The court fined each offender 50 penalty units (GH¢600). An eighth person, Raphael Adjetey, paid and avoided jail, officials said.

Those remanded are Samuel Aryeequaye, Evans Derry, Kwesi Milla, Richard Quintin Coffie, Seidu Aminu, Awuaaba Michael, and Quarcoo Ernest.

AMA’s Head of Public Affairs, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, said the arrests were made during a night operation by Environmental Health Officers led by Florence Kuukyi, Head of the Assembly’s Environmental Health Department.

He said the team picked up the offenders at Bubuashie, Jamestown and Chorkor, as the Assembly steps up enforcement of sanitation by-laws.

Mr Ankrah said the Environmental Health Department has started 24-hour operations to improve compliance, with day-and-night monitoring aimed at reducing public nuisance and protecting public health.
