The Ofankor-Nsawam road project is currently facing an uphill of over 80 court cases that have led to the stalling of the project, making its completion difficult.

Initially set for completion in July 2024, the project now faces indefinite delays due to a series of court cases preventing construction from moving forward.

During an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show, the Ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Nasir Ahmad Yartey, explained that these legal challenges have restricted the contractor’s ability to proceed with key aspects of the work. Until the cases are resolved, the project remains in limbo.

He noted that many of these disputes involve property owners contesting demolitions or seeking compensation, further complicating the situation.

He emphasized that the ministry cannot bypass the legal process, stating, “If a property is earmarked for demolition and the owner takes legal action, there’s little we can do until the court makes a ruling.”

The Ofankor-Nsawam road project, valued at $350 million, is a key infrastructure initiative designed to improve transportation along the Accra-Kumasi highway—one of Ghana’s busiest routes.

The expansion and refurbishment are expected to alleviate traffic congestion, boost trade and economic activities, and enhance commuter safety.

However, the prolonged delays have frustrated daily road users, who continue to endure worsening traffic conditions and economic disruptions. Many have urged the government to prioritize resolving the legal disputes to allow construction to proceed without further setbacks.
