Occupy Ghana petitions OSP to investigate alleged attempt by businessman to bribe Majority MPs
"The attempt by the businessman to bribe the MPs “would be an attempt to influence the conduct of MPs in the course of their official duties, a potential corruption offence that falls within the remit of your office.”
Pressure Group Occupy Ghana has petitioned the Office of the Special Prosecutor to investigate allegations that an unnamed wealthy businessman had tried to bribe some Majority MPs.
Majority leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu and the MP for Asante-Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi, had alleged that the said businessman had attempted to bribe the MPs, in order to stop them from going ahead with threats to not cooperate with government business if President Akufo-Addo does not sack Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta and the Minister of State at the Ministry of Finance, Charles Adu Boahen, from office.
The Majority Leader later then said Parliament would investigate the allegation of bribery levelled against the unnamed businessman.
“The alleged bribery has come to my notice, and we will investigate to see if it is true and the motive behind it,” he is quoted to have said last week to the Parliamentary Press Corps, in Accra.
But in their petition, Occupy Ghana maintains that the attempt by the businessman to bribe the MPs “would be an attempt to influence the conduct of MPs in the course of their official duties, a potential corruption offence that falls within the remit of your office.”
We wish to draw your attention to these allegations and to petition your good office to investigate these allegations, and if the allegations are established to be true, proceed to prosecute,” the petition further said.
