Notorious armed robber jailed 18 years in Upper West
In a major breakthrough announced by the Public Affairs Directorate of the Ghana Police Service, the Upper West Regional Police Command confirmed the arrest and sentencing of 25-year-old Adinan Mahmoud, widely known by his street name “Okra.”
Residents of the Upper West Region are breathing a sigh of relief following the conviction of a well-known armed robber whose activities had long plagued the area.
In a major breakthrough announced by the Public Affairs Directorate of the Ghana Police Service, the Upper West Regional Police Command confirmed the arrest and sentencing of 25-year-old Adinan Mahmoud, widely known by his street name “Okra.” His capture marks the culmination of weeks of intelligence-led operations spearheaded by the Regional Police Intelligence Directorate.
Mahmoud was apprehended on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at a secluded hideout in Sandemuni, a suburb of Wa Municipality, after evading arrest for multiple armed robbery incidents across the region.
He was swiftly arraigned before the Wa Circuit Court on Monday, June 2. Presiding Judge His Honour Jonathan Avoogo handed down a sentence of 18 years' imprisonment with hard labour after Mahmoud entered a guilty plea to charges of conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery itself.
The case also involves two other suspects, Abdulai Ibrahim (alias Baba) and Abdulai Kipo, who are accused of working alongside Mahmoud. Both men pleaded not guilty and have been remanded—one in police custody and the other in prison—pending further proceedings scheduled for Tuesday, June 3.
The statement further emphasized the Command's unwavering commitment to rooting out criminal elements and maintaining law and order. Authorities say efforts are ongoing to track down remaining accomplices and dismantle organized crime networks operating in the region.
The conviction sends a strong message that the police will continue to act decisively against anyone who threatens the safety of the public.
