The First Law faculty in the northern part of Ghana was last week launched by the Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies(SDD-UBIDS) in the Upper West Region with the matriculation of the first 105 students.

Being the first in the Northern part of Ghana, it is expected to serve the needs of prospective law students in that part of the country.

Speaking on the theme; “Access to quality legal education; a joint responsibility, getting it right at Dombo University”, the Deputy Attorney General, Dianah Asonaba-Dapaah noted that the debate about access to legal education cannot be complete without the quest to provide quality education.

As such, she tasked the school to ensure an appropriate student-lecturer ratio and provide a well-stocked library with quality learning materials and the needed infrastructure.

Zeroing in on the issue of quality, Ms. Dapaah reiterated that it requires a joint effort of the General Legal Council, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, well-meaning lawyers, and everyone concerned.

She bemoaned the situation where students malign senior lawyers, portraying them as villains as excuses for their (students) inability to cope with the requirement and complexities of legal education.

The Deputy AG thus advised such students that one’s admission into Law School is not an automatic route to securing a career as a lawyer and thus they must work hard and strive to merit the crown.

On his part, the Chair of the University’s Council, Mr. Kweku Yamoah Paintsil urged the students to embrace professionalism and the required ethics which is vital in forming a credible personality as lawyers.
