A 26-year-old man has been arrested for abducting a 5-year-old in the North-East Region, police have confirmed.

The victim was reported missing two weeks ago after she didn’t return home from school.

The North East Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Robert Annabik Anmain said the suspect, Solomon Awunibiliga, allegedly escaped with the child from Walewale in the North-East Region to a farming community in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality in the Upper East Region.

"Our investigations so far revealed that he (the suspect) met the child returning from school and he lured her that he was taking her to her mother but boarded a vehicle and took her to his village called Mirigu in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality in the Upper East Region,” he said.

According to the police, their preliminary investigations also established a motive for the crime. The suspect is reported to have committed the offence because he wanted to present a grandchild to his mother, following alleged threats from her that he would be barred from her funeral if she doesn’t see a grandchild before she dies.

Police say they are still investigating the incident, and that the suspect had been charged with child stealing and would be processed for court soon.
