The Chief Imam of the Bole Traditional Area, Alhaji Mohammed Iddrisu, has officially prohibited extravagant Islamic weddings within his jurisdiction, with the directive taking effect on Wednesday, March 5, 2025.

This decision, made after extensive consultations with Islamic clerics, aims to reduce the growing financial strain associated with weddings and ensure that marriage ceremonies adhere to Islamic traditions.

The Chief Imam voiced concerns over the rising costs of weddings, which have become a significant obstacle for young people seeking to marry. The directive specifically bans lavish receptions, multiple outfit changes by couples, and elaborate dance celebrations, commonly known as "jams."

Additionally, the ruling restricts male beauticians from dressing women, citing the practice as inconsistent with Islamic customs.

A statement from the Office of the Bole Chief Imam emphasized that these practices have significantly inflated wedding expenses, making marriage less accessible to many.

“This measure is intended to eliminate excessive wedding costs and prevent practices that hinder young people from getting married,” the statement read.

To ensure compliance, the Chief Imam has called on religious leaders, community elders, and local authorities to support the enforcement of the ban. He also encouraged residents to embrace modest wedding ceremonies that align with Islamic values.

Copies of the directive have been distributed to key stakeholders, including the Paramount Chief of Bole (Bolewura), the Bole Municipal Police Commander, the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), and local media outlets such as Nkilgi FM and Yagbon FM, to facilitate its implementation.
