NLC secures injunction to restrain UTAG from continuing strike action
The strike action has had a negative toll on academic activities in various universities across the country, with threats by the management of some institutions to close down the school if the strike exceeds two weeks.
The National Labour Commission has secured an ex-parte injunction at the Accra High Court to restrain the University Teachers Association from continuing its strike action.
UTAG is demanding the full implementation of a 2012 Single Spine package which put entry-level lecturers on a salary of $2,084 per month, while the senior staffers want the computation and release of their tier 2 Pension in arrears with interest.
It insists that its members are currently worse compared to nine years ago relative to their conditions of service. Thus has been on a nationwide strike since Monday, August 2, 2021.
A meeting between the government and the University Teachers Association of Ghana, UTAG, over its ongoing strike ended inconclusively on Wednesday, August 4, 2021.

The National Labour Commission(NLC) on Monday, August 2, 2021, asked the University Teachers Association(UTAG) and the Senior Staff Association of universities of Ghana(SSA-UoG) to suspend their separate strike action and come to the negotiation table for talks on Thursday, August 5, 2021.
Notwithstanding, UTAG and the Senior Staff Association refused to heed the call and continued their strike action.
However, in an injunction dated August 6, 2021, the High Court has ordered UTAG to call off its strike action and comply with the August 2, 2021 directives issued by the National Labour Commission(NLC).
“It is hereby ordered that the Respondents by itself, its Executive officers, members, agents, servants etc. are restrained from continuing with the current industrial action and are to comply with the Directive of the National Labour Commission dated 2nd August 2021,” it says.
