The High Court has told the National Labour Commission (NLC) and the Universities Teachers Association Ghana (UTAG) to reach an out court agreement regarding the issue of the ongoing strike by the latter.

The NLC dragged UTAG to the High Court(Labour Division) seeking an interlocutory injunction to compel UTAG to comply with its January 13, 2022 decision.

UTAG has been on strike since January 10; a development to which many are predicting the closure of universities soon.

The Association had said it was unable to call off its strike despite the Labour Commission’s ruling that the industrial action was illegal.

When the case was called today, February 3, 2022, His Lordship, Justice Frank Rockson Aboadwe called the parties into his chambers for an in-camera discussion.

Both parties have been given up to February 10, 2022, to report back to the court on the progress of the judge’s order.

However, the Lawyer for UTAG, Kwasi Keli-Delataa told reporters that if they are unable to reach an agreement by February 10, the NLC will be allowed to move its motions.

“When we went to the chambers the judge decided that we should take another bite at an opportunity to try to settle out of court, so that is what took place today. We made it clear to the judge that the national leadership of the UTAG asked for time for the UTAG to go and hold the necessary consultation and then report back to the court on 10th of February at 1 PM,” he said.
