An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced a Nigerian woman to seven years’ imprisonment with hard labour after finding her guilty of trafficking two women and forcing them into prostitution.

The convict, Gift Chinyere Aminu, also known as Joy, was convicted after trial by the Accra Circuit Court Four.

She had denied the charges.

The court, presided over by Lawrencia Awura Abena Darkowaa Gyamfi, also ordered her to compensate the victims.

According to the prosecution, Aminu lived around the Kwame Nkrumah Circle Railways area with two other Nigerian women, Jennifer and Blessing, who are currently at large.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Issah Achiburi told the court that the case reached the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department Headquarters on October 31, 2025.

The docket had been forwarded from the Kaneshie Police Station through the Director-General of the CID.

Aminu was later brought before the Unit together with two victims, identified as Jennifer Izi, also known as Lovina, and Aissah Mohammed, also known as Gold.

The prosecution said the matter came to light after Izi contacted ThankGod Iheme, a Nigerian resident in Accra, and told him that a Nigerian woman had brought them from Togo to Ghana.

She allegedly said they had been forced into prostitution and beaten whenever they failed to comply.

Following receipt of the case, Aminu was re-arrested.

During interrogation, she admitted knowing the two victims.

The court heard that Aminu had previously lived and worked at Rafineri, a suburb of Lome in Togo, where she engaged in prostitution.

She allegedly told investigators that Jennifer and Blessing handed the victims over to her in Togo to manage them in prostitution and collect proceeds for onward transmission.

The prosecution said Aminu took the victims to a shrine and made them swear an oath that they would run mad if they ran away with her money.

ASP Achiburi said a police-led operation in Togo later caused Aminu to relocate to Ghana with the victims.

After arriving in Ghana, she allegedly continued to force them into prostitution at Kwame Nkrumah Circle.

The court was told that one of the victims, Izi, later discovered she was pregnant.

When she informed Aminu, the convict allegedly gave her medicine to terminate the pregnancy.

Investigations further revealed that Aminu collected 300,000 naira from Mohammed and 250,000 naira from Izi.

After investigations, Aminu was charged and put before the court.

She was found guilty and sentenced to seven years in prison with hard labour.
