A Techiman Circuit Court has handed a four-month prison sentence to Mariama Issah Sulemana after finding her guilty of assaulting her 12-year-old stepdaughter.

Mariama, 41, is a caterer and NADMO zonal coordinator in the Bono East Region.

The case centred on injuries found on the child, a JHS One pupil of Nkwaeso Methodist School in Techiman, after she was allegedly beaten with a car key.

The incident was reported to the Divisional Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit by the Techiman Municipal Girls’ Education Officer, Mrs Ellen White Opoku.

According to the prosecution, the assault followed an allegation that the child had stolen money belonging to Mariama.

Police said the girl sustained injuries to her palm, face and other parts of her body.

Although Mariama initially received police inquiry bail after her arrest on May 24, 2026, because she had a young child, she was later arraigned before the court.

She pleaded with explanation, but the court rejected her justification that the child’s conduct had provoked the assault.

The judge said the punishment was necessary to deter others and noted that the convict had not shown convincing remorse.

Beyond the prison sentence, the court also issued care-related orders for the children in the household.

Mariama’s two stepchildren are to be placed with their paternal family.

Her five biological children, including a one-and-a-half-month-old baby, are to be referred to the Family Tribunal for a decision on their care while she is in prison.

Speaking after the ruling, Nana Asantewaa Munufie, Guidance and Counselling Coordinator at the Techiman Municipal Education Directorate, said the judgment should remind parents and guardians that child abuse carries serious consequences.
