The Director of the National Disaster Management Organization(NADMO) in the Ashanti Region has called for prosecutorial powers to be given to the organization to enable it to take on Estate developers in the Region who build in waterways and unauthorized locations.

Mr.Kwabena Senkyere is unhappy with the fact that NADMO has no Legislative Instrument(LI) that empowers the organization to on its own, take on individuals who flout building laws of the Country.

This statement comes after the rains almost got the whole of Kumasi submerged as flood-prone areas were displaced and even drowned a toddler.

Mr.Senkyere spoke on Akoma FM’s current affairs political show ‘Ghana Akoma’ on Thursday, June 24, 2021, and was monitored by DLN.

He explained that he had made several complaints to the Assemblies and even copied the Regional Minister on several occasions, relative to how developers build in waterways and unauthorized locations.

However, his several moves and attempts have proven futile.

The Director further lamented that NADMO’s powers are just to make reports and just advise authorities.

Additionally, he noted that NADMO with prosecutorial powers, NADMO will be able to bite and initiate surcharges against recalcitrant developers which will go a long way to avert the yearly flooding situation in the Region.
