The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has intercepted a significant quantity of suspected cannabis at Kotoka International Airport (KIA), leading to the arrest of a British traveller and two airport personnel suspected of collusion.

On Sunday, May 18, 2025, NACOC officers seized 92 slabs of what is believed to be cannabis, weighing approximately 53.6 kilograms. The contraband was found during routine baggage checks after the suspect landed in Accra on Emirates flight EK 787 from Thailand, transiting through Dubai.

The intercepted cargo was concealed in two suitcases, which immediately triggered suspicion during inspection procedures.

Subsequent investigations uncovered a broader plot involving two accomplices—a customs official and an employee working at the airport’s Commercially Important Person (CIP) section. Both individuals have since been detained for their alleged roles in facilitating the smuggling attempt.

Speaking to the media, NACOC’s Deputy Director, Alexander Twum Barimah, confirmed the arrests and warned that the Commission remains vigilant in combating international drug trafficking. He issued a stern warning to airport staff and travellers alike:

“This should serve as a deterrent. Anyone involved in trafficking or aiding traffickers—especially those entrusted with security at our borders—will be prosecuted without hesitation,” he said.

All three suspects are currently in custody and are cooperating with authorities as investigations continue into the attempted drug trafficking operation.

NACOC has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that Ghana’s entry points remain secure against the global narcotics trade.
