Mpreaso MP backs bill to loosen dual-citizenship limits on public office
The proposed change targets constitutional rules that prevent some Ghanaians from holding certain public offices because they hold dual citizenship or are seen as having allegiance to another country.
The Member of Parliament for Mpreaso, Davis Opoku Ansah, says he is co-sponsoring the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana (Amendment) Bill, 2025, now before Parliament.
The proposed change targets constitutional rules that prevent some Ghanaians from holding certain public offices because they hold dual citizenship or are seen as having allegiance to another country.
Mr Opoku Ansah says the aim is to fix what he describes as a long-standing unfair barrier that shuts out qualified citizens who are ready to serve.
He argued that Ghana could gain from the skills and exposure of the diaspora, pointing to contributions such as remittances, business investments, job creation, and the transfer of knowledge and expertise.
The bill is expected to attract strong debate in Parliament as MPs consider what it could mean for eligibility for public office and wider diaspora involvement in national development.
