Kylian Mbappé has launched a full-scale legal offensive against his former club, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), to recover €55 million in outstanding salary payments. The World Cup-winning striker's legal team has initiated proceedings before a Paris court, citing breach of contract and wage default.
According to legal representative Delphine Verheyden, efforts to resolve the matter amicably over the past year have failed. As a result, Mbappé has moved to secure a precautionary seizure of the disputed amount, which has reportedly been frozen from PSG’s bank accounts. A court hearing is set for May 26.
In addition to court proceedings, Mbappé’s legal team is appealing to France’s sports minister to intervene and challenge a ruling by the French Football Federation’s appeals panel, which deemed Mbappé’s original complaint inadmissible. Verheyden also revealed plans to involve UEFA, arguing that PSG’s failure to meet contractual salary obligations could warrant sanctions—including the potential loss of its Champions League license.
PSG, however, maintains that it prefers a peaceful resolution. In a statement, the club accused Mbappé of rejecting every attempt at mediation and questioned his legal approach, stating that the labor tribunal is the appropriate forum for the dispute.
“The procedures initiated by Kylian Mbappé’s lawyers only serve to stall proceedings before the labor court, where PSG is prepared to present all facts and evidence of a binding agreement,” the club stated. PSG claims there was a verbal arrangement that Mbappé would forgo bonuses when he was reintegrated into the team after being sidelined in 2023 for declining a contract extension.
The French league’s appeals panel had earlier ruled in Mbappé’s favor, ordering PSG to pay the disputed amount—which includes three months’ salary and a significant portion of a loyalty bonus.
Mbappé, who joined Real Madrid in the summer on a free transfer after netting a record 256 goals for PSG, left the French capital amid strained relations. Tensions grew after he informed PSG in June 2023 that he would not activate the optional extension in his contract, effectively putting the club at risk of losing him for free.
During the fallout, Mbappé was excluded from PSG’s preseason tour and training with the senior team. Though he later returned to the squad, his legal representatives have now accused the club of harassment over his treatment during that period. They intend to pursue this through additional legal channels, including an industrial tribunal.
Mbappé and his mother have also taken legal action over online abuse they received, further escalating an already bitter dispute with his former club.
