The Legal Education Board (LEB) has ordered the University of Manila to shut down its College of Law, citing poor performance in recent bar examinations as the main reason behind the decision.

According to a public announcement made on Monday, the closure will take effect starting the 2024–2025 academic year.

Although the university was officially informed of the closure order on June 5, 2024, the board noted that the College of Law has allegedly continued to accept new students. This prompted the board to issue the public statement, reiterating that it does not acknowledge any enrollment made after the directive.

The LEB emphasized that the university’s law program failed to meet the minimum benchmarks required for legal education. Aside from consistently underperforming in the bar exams, the college also reportedly did not comply with the approved curriculum and academic standards.

In addition, the board pointed out gaps in the institution’s learning facilities and resources, which are considered essential for delivering quality legal education.

Notably, the Supreme Court’s bar exam report indicated that no graduates from the UM College of Law participated in the 2024 bar exams.

As of now, university officials have not issued a statement in response to the announcement.
