James Yeboah, a 33-year-old illegal miner, has been sentenced to five years in prison by the Asante Akropong Circuit Court in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District for assaulting a fellow resident in Essuowin, Amansie West District.

Yeboah pleaded guilty to the charges and was convicted based on his admission. In addition to his prison sentence, the court also ordered him to compensate the victim, Akwasi Amponsah, with GH₵6,000.

Police Chief Inspector Ruth Gborson presented the case in court, revealing that both Yeboah and Amponsah are residents of Essuowin. The incident occurred on February 23, 2025, when Yeboah confronted Amponsah while he was heading to visit his girlfriend. Without any provocation, Yeboah began attacking Amponsah with a cutlass, inflicting deep wounds to his head and neck.

Amponsah managed to dodge most of the strikes but was severely injured. He was rushed to the Essuowin Health Center for emergency treatment and subsequently admitted. Following a formal complaint, Yeboah was arrested by the Essuowin Police.

In his caution statement, Yeboah admitted to the attack but claimed it was not intentional. After investigations, he was charged and brought to trial.

In delivering the judgment, the court highlighted the gravity of the offense and the importance of deterring similar violent acts within the community.
