Man jailed 15 years for hammer attack and phone robbery
The convict, Enock Appiah, also known as “Odanka”, pleaded guilty to unlawful entry and robbery.
A Tarkwa Circuit Court has jailed a 23-year-old unemployed man for 15 years with hard labour after he attacked and robbed a food vendor at Adjakaa Manso in the Western Region.
The convict, Enock Appiah, also known as “Odanka”, pleaded guilty to unlawful entry and robbery. He was convicted on his own plea by Justice Mercy Adei Kotei, a High Court judge sitting as a circuit court judge.
The court sentenced him to three years on the unlawful entry charge and 15 years on the robbery charge. The sentences will run at the same time.
Prosecutor ASP Joseph Lartey said the victim, Aisha Ayaba, lives in the same neighbourhood as Appiah.
He told the court that at about 3:00am on 27 January 2026, Ayaba saw Appiah hiding behind her door while she was in her room. When she challenged him, he allegedly hit her on the neck with a hammer, shoved her against the door, and fled with two phones: an Infinix Smart and a Tecno POP 8, valued at GH¢2,700.
Ayaba reported the case to police, who later arrested Appiah at his hideout. Officers recovered the stolen phones, but the SIM cards were missing.
Police said Appiah admitted the offence during questioning and asked for forgiveness. He also led investigators back to the house, pointed to a back window he tried to use, and showed where in the room he took the phones from.
The court directed that the recovered phones be returned to Ayaba.
The hammer used in the attack was forfeited to the state and handed to the Western Central Regional Police Command.
