Man jailed 12 years after stealing trader’s foreign currencies at Aburaso
The court, presided over by Mr Jephthah Appau, sentenced him after the prosecution presented the facts of the case.
A 25-year-old unemployed man has been sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment by the Kwadaso Circuit Court after admitting that he robbed a trader at Aburaso in the Ashanti Region.
Daniel Cliff Twum, also known as Cliff Walker, pleaded guilty to robbery and was convicted on his own plea.
The court, presided over by Mr Jephthah Appau, sentenced him after the prosecution presented the facts of the case.
Police Chief Inspector David Opoku Kwabi told the court that the complainant, Hannah Owusuaah, is a trader who lives at Aburaso.
Twum, the convict, lived at Kenyasi-Abirem in the Kwabre East Municipality.
According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on June 21, 2026, at about 10:00 p.m.
The complainant was in her living room assisting her 14-year-old son with his homework when she fell asleep.
The prosecution said Twum entered the room through a window.
He allegedly pulled out a knife from his shorts and threatened to harm the child if he made any noise.
Out of fear, the boy remained quiet while Twum took two handbags belonging to the complainant.
The bags contained $2,500, €1,910, 270 Canadian dollars, £400 and 350 CFA francs.
Twum then escaped through the same window.
After the incident, the child woke his mother and told her what had happened.
A report was later made to the Ashanti Regional Anti-Armed Robbery Unit of the Ghana Police Service.
On June 24, 2026, police intelligence led officers to Twum’s hideout at Agric Nzema, where he was arrested.
A search conducted on him led to the discovery of a receipt from Mikkado Forex Bureau Limited dated June 22, 2026, with a face value of GH¢69,414.
In his caution statement, Twum admitted the offence.
He told police that he used GH¢48,000 from the money to buy a Honda motorbike and spent the rest on personal matters.
Police later retrieved the motorbike, with registration number M-26-AS 9958, and kept it as evidence.
After further investigations, Twum was charged and brought before the court.
He was convicted and sentenced to 12 years in prison.
