A 42-year-old man has been sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment with hard labour after being found guilty of defiling a seven-year-old boy in Wa.

Elyasu Kunateh was convicted by the Wa High Court after a full trial.

The court, presided over by Justice Osei-Wusu Antwi, delivered judgment on Thursday, July 23, 2026.

The case was investigated by the Upper West Regional Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit of the Ghana Police Service.

According to the Upper West Regional Police Command, Kunateh was arrested on Tuesday, January 20, 2026.

His arrest followed a report by the victim’s mother that the incident had occurred three days earlier, on Saturday, January 17.

Police said investigations began immediately after the complaint was made.

The child was referred to a medical facility for examination.

He was also given psychosocial support.

Kunateh was later arraigned before the Wa High Court and remanded into police custody while the trial proceeded.

After hearing the case, the court found him guilty and sentenced him to 10 years in prison with hard labour.

The Upper West Regional Police Command said the conviction reflects its commitment to protecting children and other vulnerable persons.

It said it will continue to pursue reported cases of child abuse, sexual offences and gender-based violence.

The Command urged parents, guardians, caregivers and members of the public to remain alert and report suspected abuse to the nearest police station for prompt action.
