Man fined over WhatsApp post targeting Akim Oda MP
The convict, Emmanuel Oppong Krah, was also ordered to enter a three-year bond to keep the peace and maintain good behaviour. If he fails to pay the fine, he will serve a three-year prison term.
A Circuit Court at Akim Swedru has fined a 37-year-old man GH¢2,400 after he admitted making offensive and false claims about the Member of Parliament for Akim Oda on WhatsApp.
The convict, Emmanuel Oppong Krah, was also ordered to enter a three-year bond to keep the peace and maintain good behaviour. If he fails to pay the fine, he will serve a three-year prison term.
Krah, who works as a security officer at Sentuo Oil Refinery, pleaded guilty to offensive conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace, publication of false news and threat of death.
The prosecution told the court that on 14 March 2026, he posted remarks on a WhatsApp platform known as Hot Issues in which he allegedly insulted MP Alexander Akwasi Acquah and made disparaging comments about his public speech.
Police said the accused also claimed that radio stations linked to the MP were engaged in illegal power connections and were not paying for electricity consumed. Another allegation was that the stations’ general manager had bribed Electricity Company of Ghana officials.
Those claims, the court heard, spread within the community and caused concern.
The complaint was later made to the Akim Oda Police by Maxwell Anti, the general manager of the stations mentioned in the post.
According to Chief Inspector Samuel Delight Yeboah, police investigations, including checks with ECG officials, found that the allegations had no basis.
Krah was arrested on 17 April 2026 and subsequently taken before the court, which was presided over by Akosua Atta Nyarko.
