Man arrested for allegedly trafficking 16 children and young adults

Immigration officials have arrested 37-year-old Kwame Tawiah for attempting to traffick 16 persons into Côte d’Ivoire. 

According to reports, he was arrested at the Half Assini New Town border post in the Jomoro Municipality of the Western Region, after enforcement officers said they received intelligence that the suspect was leading children through an unapproved route to cross the border. 

Of the 16, 11 are girls and 5 boys, aged between seven and 20. Reports indicate that they were allegedly being trafficked to Côte d’Ivoire to engage in fishing. 

The officer in charge of the Half Assini Command of the Ghana Immigration Service, ACI Kenneth Arhinful is reported to have told Angel Fm all the victims are from coastal towns in the Central Region. 

Suspect Kwame Tawiah is in the custody of police in Half Assini, while the victims have been sent to the Social Welfare Department for further action.
