Deputy Attorney-General, Alfred Tuah-Yeboah has tasked the nation’s judges to maintain their judicial temperament in this era of unfair criticisms of their work.

He notes that this is the surest way for them to be able to dispense their duty of holding everyone in check.

“The Ghanaian people expect you to maintain your judicial temperament even in the face of unfair criticisms of your work. That is the surest way to hold everyone in check,” he said.

Delivering a speech at the opening ceremony of the 2022 Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana conference, in Accra on September 28, Mr. Tuah-Yeboah also stated that public perce[ption of the judiciary is often coloured by misunderstanding of their decisions and judgments.

However, he noted emphatically that such perceptions are at “odds with reality”, adding that even though cases of political colours come before the courts of adjudication, judges who sit on such cases are usually put under media scrutiny.

He added that in the course of doing so, judges are subjected to partisan criticisms, which even though ‘hash’ and ‘unwarranted’, are inevitable.

“Judges who determine such cases are many at times under media scrutiny and mostly subjected to partisan criticism. These criticisms albeit hash and unwarranted, are inevitable.”

The Deputy AG, therefore, charged them to remain focused on the discharge of their constitutional mandate without fear or favour.

“It is one of the occupational hazards and with the training you have gone through to attain the respectful possessions on the bench, it is expected that you remain focused on your job and discharge your constitutional mandate without fear or favour.”
