Lawyer Oppong installed Mawerehene: Pledges to support ‘galamsey’ fight

In an interview with the press after swearing his Oath to the Okyehene, Amoatia Oforipanin, Omansumfour Barima Oppong Kodea expressed his desire and readiness to support Okyehene’s long waged war against illegal mining and its threats to the environment.

A private Legal practitioner and Law lecturer, Yaw D. Oppong has been installed as Mawerehene of Akyem Abuakwa under the stool name, Omansumfour Barima Oppong Kodea.

The event took place on Saturday and Sunday, 22nd and 23rd January 2022 at the Ofori Panin Fie at Kyebi in the Eastern Region.

In an interview with the press after swearing his Oath to the Okyehene, Amoatia Oforipanin, Omansumfour Barima Oppong Kodea expressed his desire and readiness to support Okyehene’s long waged war against illegal mining and its threats to the environment.

He noted that this is his first and foremost duty assigned to him and indicated how passionate he is about this task.

Mawerehene is one of the sub-chiefs of the Akyem Abuakwa Paramountcy.

Mr Yaw Oppong is currently a Senior lecturer at the Ghana School of Law.

YAW D. OPPONG is a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Ghana and a Barrister- at-Law with over 20 years of experience as a practicing lawyer. He has invaluable experience and expertise in Energy and Natural Resource Law. He also has enormous experience in Banking and Finance law and practices having worked as a lawyer for a number of banking and financial institutions in Ghana.

He has strong expertise in arbitration and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, London. He is currently the Managing Partner of Ampofo, Oppong and Associates, a firm of Lawyers, in Accra, Ghana. He has lectured at a number of Universities in Ghana, including Central University.

Yaw Oppong is a prolific writer and author of a number of articles and a book, including his most recent book, Contemporary Trends in the Law of Immovable Property in Ghana, and an online published article titled Domesticating Dispute Resolution Arising from Petroleum Agreements in Ghana.

He has for several years been a regular resource person contributing to topical discussions on a myriad of legal issues and is a well-known personality on various media platforms in Ghana.

He obtained a first degree in Law at the University of Ghana and successfully qualified as a Barrister-At-Law from the Ghana School of Law, Makola – Accra, Ghana.

Yaw Oppong also holds a Master’s Degree in Oil and Gas Law (LLM) from the Faculty of Law, University of Ghana, Legon.
