Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, the Minister-designate for Labour, Jobs, and Employment, has proposed a reassessment of Ghana’s retirement age, which currently stands at 60 years.
Speaking before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on January 30, Dr. Pelpuo acknowledged the ongoing debate surrounding the possibility of extending the retirement age to 65 or even 70.
He emphasized that any adjustments should be made in line with the country’s economic stability and preparedness.
“There’s a lot of talk about increasing the retirement age now—some suggest 65 years, others say 70—but many retirees are still strong, so why should they stop working?
“This decision must be taken harmoniously, ensuring that we assess whether the time is right for such a move,” he said.
He stressed that any decision regarding this matter must be made collectively and thoughtfully.
Dr. Pelpuo also underscored the need for a national consensus before implementing any major changes to the current policy.
“I support the idea of a review, but it must be approached with consideration of our economic situation and our ability to facilitate the transition smoothly,” he added.
