The National Labour Commission (NLC) has directed the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) to call off its strike with immediate effect, saying it wants the stoppage ended before it can hear the substantive issues in dispute.

In a statement issued to the Ghana News Agency, the Acting Executive Secretary of the Commission, Dr Bernice A. Welbeck, said the instruction was meant to clear the way for further discussions on the concerns raised by the association.

SSA-UoG began a nationwide indefinite strike on Wednesday, 3 February 2026, over conditions of service.

The Commission said it summoned four unions linked to the action: SSA-UoG, the Teachers’ and Educational Workers Union of the TUC, the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG), and the Technical Universities Administrators Association of Ghana (TUAAG).

However, the NLC said only TUAAG appeared before it, represented by its local president from Takoradi and a local vice chairman from Accra. The Commission’s statement said the respondents at the meeting included the Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission and a senior legal officer from the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, among others.

According to the NLC, TUAAG’s representatives told the Commission they were not on strike. The Commission subsequently directed TUAAG to formally write to disassociate itself from the industrial action if it is not participating.
