Kwadwo Akofena, 2 others arrested over Adwoa Safo shooting incident

Israel Kwadwo Safo, popularly known as Akofena, has been arrested by the Ghana Police Service as investigations continue into a shooting incident involving his sister, former Dome-Kwabenya MP Sarah Adwoa Safo.

Police say Akofena reported himself to the Regional Police Headquarters on June 22, 2026, a day after the incident.

He was later transferred to the Criminal Investigations Department Headquarters to assist with investigations.

The case has also led to the arrest of two other persons, Nana Kwaku Afriyie and Kwadwo Safo Koomson.

All three suspects are currently in police custody.

They are expected to be put before court on June 23, 2026.

According to the police, searches conducted on Akofena’s vehicle and residence at Kwabenya led to the recovery of firearms and ammunition.

The items retrieved included 120 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 50 rounds of .45 calibre ammunition and 25 rounds of .40 calibre ammunition.

Police also found additional loaded magazines and two Glock pistols.

One of the pistols is said to be registered in Akofena’s name.

The police say the recovered items form part of ongoing investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The incident reportedly occurred at a property linked to Israel Safo in the Greater Accra Region.

It comes amid an ongoing succession dispute within the Kristo Asafo Mission following the death of its founder, Apostle Professor Kwadwo Safo, in September 2025.

The dispute has triggered legal proceedings over who should lead the church and its related institutions.

Earlier, the Kwadwo Safo family claimed that Adwoa Safo had gone to serve a court injunction intended to stop an installation ceremony involving her younger brother when the confrontation occurred.

The family alleged that gunshots were fired during the incident.

Police say investigations are continuing to establish the full facts and determine the roles of all persons connected to the matter.
