Two students accused of gang raping a fellow student during an inter-school sports event in Koforidua will return to court on 18 February, after a district court adjourned the case.

The suspects, who are both underage, have been remanded into the care of their parents. They are facing charges of conspiracy to commit a crime, to wit rape, and rape. Police say one of them is also charged with robbery, and investigations are still ongoing.

The case is one of several incidents reported during the Super Zonal Sports Competition in the Eastern Region, held from 4 to 6 February.

In a statement dated 11 February, the Ghana Education Service (GES) condemned what it called serious misconduct connected to the competition, including both the alleged rape and a separate stabbing.

GES said a student of Koforidua Senior High Technical School was stabbed about 200 metres from the competition venue while going out for lunch. The student has been treated and discharged, and one suspect has been arrested to assist police investigations.

On the alleged rape case, GES said the victim is a student of Osino Senior High School and that the incident happened at a location some distance from the competition grounds.

The Service said the student has received medical attention and counselling support, including help from the Regional Guidance and Counselling Coordinator, the Girls’ Education Unit, and DOVVSU.

GES described the incidents as unacceptable and said school sports are meant to build discipline, teamwork and unity. It said sanctions will be applied under its code of conduct once investigations are completed, and urged the public to remain calm while police continue their work.
