The Koforidua High Court in the Eastern Region has issued a temporary injunction halting Ernest Kumi's swearing-in as the Member of Parliament-elect for Akwatia.

This decision comes three weeks after the Electoral Commission (EC) declared Mr. Kumi the winner of the parliamentary race. The race had been contested by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) amid disputes over the collation of results.

Henry Boakye-Yiadom, the NDC's candidate, has taken legal action against the EC, Ernest Kumi, and the Clerk of Parliament, requesting a court order to prevent Mr. Kumi from being sworn in.

Following the hearing, the court ruled that Mr. Kumi should not be acknowledged as the MP-elect. The ruling specifically restrains the respondents and their affiliates from proceeding with any actions that would formalize Mr. Kumi's status as the elected MP for Akwatia. The court's directive also bars Mr. Kumi from presenting himself as the Member of Parliament for the constituency.

The injunction is valid for 10 days.

The EC announced Ernest Kumi's victory at the National Police Training School in Tesano, Accra, after previous attempts to finalize the results in the Eastern Region proved unsuccessful. Mr. Kumi secured 19,269 votes, while his opponent, Henry Boakye-Yiadom, received 17,206 votes.

Once considered an NPP stronghold, the Akwatia constituency has become a contentious political battleground between the NPP and NDC.
