Legal practitioner and former Director of the Ghana School of Law, Kwaku Ansa-Asare, has strongly criticized the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) for labeling former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta as a fugitive.

Speaking on JoyNews, Mr. Ansa-Asare condemned the OSP’s actions, calling them excessive and inappropriate.

He questioned the legitimacy of the OSP’s declaration, arguing that such a step is legally unfounded and politically motivated. According to him, Mr. Ofori-Atta remains a citizen of Ghana and cannot be deemed a fugitive in the absence of a court ruling to that effect.

Mr. Ansa-Asare further urged the Special Prosecutor to reconsider his stance by reviewing Article 19 of the Ghanaian Constitution, cautioning that the pursuit of convictions without due process could be futile.

His remarks follow a press briefing held earlier that day, where Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng announced that Mr. Ofori-Atta was wanted on suspicion of corruption.

The accusations relate to financial dealings involving the National Cathedral project as well as contracts between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Strategic Mobilization Ghana Ltd (SML).
