Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, has announced that individuals assisting in the apprehension of drug users will be given priority in recruitment into Ghana’s security services.

Speaking during a community sensitisation event in Sabon Zongo, Accra, on Thursday, May 8, the Minister outlined the government’s new strategy to combat drug trafficking and abuse, particularly within Zongo communities.

He praised local youth for taking a stand against the drug menace and pledged to reward their efforts with concrete opportunities. “If you give me 10 to 15 names of those leading this fight, I assure you, Insha Allah, they will be absorbed before the end of this month to support the work you are doing,” he said.

Muntaka added that when future recruitment into the security services opens, individuals who have actively supported anti-drug efforts and meet the necessary requirements will be prioritised. “This is to encourage community-led action and show our commitment to cleaning up the streets,” he said.

In addition to the recruitment promise, the Minister issued a stern warning to police officers who fail to act swiftly on drug-related reports. He stated that any commander who does not respond to calls from the community regarding drug activities will be transferred.

He advised the public not to take matters into their own hands but instead to report offenders and cooperate with the authorities. “You sacrifice your time and energy to arrest these people. The police must not frustrate your efforts,” he said.

The initiative is part of a larger effort by the Interior Ministry to engage Zongo youth in meaningful, law-abiding roles while addressing the social impact of drug abuse.
