Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo has advocated for creating an independent committee to oversee the appointment of the Chief Justice, emphasizing the importance of transparency and a merit-based process.

In an interview on Joy News' PM Express on January 7, Justice Akuffo discussed the shortcomings of the current system and the advantages of establishing an independent commission.

She expressed concerns about political interference in judicial appointments and dismissed the notion that changes in government should dictate the appointment of a new Chief Justice.

“If I may be very blunt, that’s a very simplistic call. That’s not how it’s supposed to work,” she said.

Justice Akuffo highlighted flaws in the existing appointment process as a central issue. “The real problem lies in how the judiciary, particularly the Chief Justice, is appointed,” she explained.

To address these challenges, the former Chief Justice proposed an independent appointment body to foster public confidence and ensure a transparent process.

“I think the public will feel more comfortable if there was some form of independent appointment commission,” she added

She further emphasized the need for clear candidate criteria and qualifications, adding, “We can establish guidelines for nominations, selection processes, and the qualifications required. These are achievable steps.”
