The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has initiated an investigation into election-related deaths from 2020 and 2024, following a directive from President John Mahama, according to a report by the Chronicle Newspaper.
As per the report, Dr. Dampare has set up a specialized investigative unit at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters. This team has been assigned specific timelines to carry out their inquiries and present their findings.
Leading the investigative team is Chief Superintendent Joseph Nanegbe, alongside experienced officers from the Ghana Police Service. The IGP has assured that all necessary resources will be made available to support the team in fulfilling its mandate.
The Chronicle further highlighted that this initiative builds on previous efforts led by Dr. Dampare since he took office in 2021. Notably, he established the Cold Case Unit at the CID Headquarters to revisit unresolved criminal cases.
The Cold Case Unit has been actively investigating the deaths linked to the 2020 elections, reportedly making substantial progress, with some suspects already facing prosecution.
On January 10, 2025, President Mahama officially directed the IGP to investigate the fatalities recorded in the last two election cycles, emphasizing the importance of justice and accountability.
