IEC to announce new date for 2026 Ghana School of Law entrance exam
The notice indicates that the Entrance Examination for qualified applicants “will take place on” a new date to be announced soon.
The Independent Examinations Committee of the General Legal Council is expected to announce a new date for the 2026 Ghana School of Law entrance examination, confirming that the examination process for admission into the Professional Law Course for the 2026/2027 academic year is still underway.
The notice indicates that the Entrance Examination for qualified applicants “will take place on” a new date to be announced soon. This suggests that, contrary to public expectation informed largely by the passage of the Legal Education reform bill, the entrance examination has not been cancelled as some had speculated.
The development is significant because the reform conversation had created uncertainty among prospective applicants, many of whom expected that the existing entrance examination regime might not continue this year. However, the latest information from the IEC points to a continuation of the examination process pending the announcement of a revised date.
The General Legal Council is the statutory body mandated to ensure proper standards in legal education and the legal profession in Ghana. Entry into the Ghana School of Law is by an Entrance Examination conducted by the Independent Examinations Committee of the Council.
According to the notice, the examination will be held at two centres in Accra and one centre in Kumasi. Applicants are required to indicate their preferred centre when applying. The IEC, however, states that once a centre is selected, it cannot be changed.
The list of applicants will be displayed on the IEC website, www.iec-glc.gov.gh.
The examination will last three hours and will cover core areas including Law of Contract, Law of Torts, Criminal Law, Law of Immovable Property, Constitutional Law, and Ghana Legal Systems and Methods.
Persons eligible to write the examination include applicants who have obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree from law faculties or schools in Ghana accredited by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission and approved by the General Legal Council.
Also eligible are Ghanaian holders of LLB or equivalent law degrees from universities in the United States of America and other common law jurisdictions, provided they have passed all the prescribed subjects, including Equity and Succession.
The IEC further notes that these requirements are without prejudice to the eligibility criteria under Regulation 2 of the Legal Profession (Professional and Post-Call Law Course) Regulations, 2018, L.I. 2355.
Applicants are required to complete a two-part application process through the IEC website. First, they must purchase an e-voucher at a non-refundable fee of GH¢200 through mobile money or Visa/Mastercard.
They must then proceed to the application portal with the e-voucher code and complete the application after paying an application fee of GH¢715.
Applicants are also required to upload a Ghana Card, a completed GLC/IEC Declaration Form, a recent passport-sized photograph, a certified true copy of their LLB certificate, and a certified true copy of their final LLB transcripts.
Upon successful completion of the application process, applicants will receive an index number by SMS and email for use in the entrance examination.
