The man suspected of stealing a police armoured vehicle has pleaded with a court in Kumasi to help him join the Ghana Police Service.

Ebenezer Frimpong made the request when he appeared before the Kwadaso Circuit Court on Friday, where he knelt and appealed for leniency after the charges were read.

The 26-year-old, who is unemployed and comes from the Atwima Mponua District in the Ashanti Region, is accused of driving off with an armoured police vehicle in what prosecutors described as a dramatic incident.

According to the prosecution, the vehicle, with registration number GP 1131, was being taken to a workshop for servicing by General Lance Corporal Joshua Denkyi.

Police told the court that the officer stopped near Nkawie Market after developing a stomach problem and left briefly to buy medication. It was during that moment, the prosecution said, that Frimpong allegedly entered the vehicle and drove away in the Abuakwa-Kumasi direction.

An alarm was raised immediately, leading to a pursuit involving officers from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department and the SWAT Unit. The suspect was eventually arrested at Mim, near Abuakwa, and the vehicle was retrieved.

Although the prosecution asked that he be held in police custody to assist with further investigations, the presiding judge, His Honour Jephtha Appau, instead ordered that he be remanded into prison custody for his own safety.

He is expected to return to court on 4 May 2026.
