Mr Enoch Obiri, a resident of Accra, has reported his wife, Esther Obiri, to her former employers, Town and Country Books Service, at Bubiashie, a suburb of  Accra, for allegedly conspiring with one of the company’s staff, Michael Nii Odartey Lamptey, to steal from it.

As a result, Esther and her alleged accomplice have been arraigned before an Accra Circuit Court on two counts of stealing, but both pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The court, presided over by Her Honour Evelyn Asamoah, yesterday granted the accused persons bail in a total sum of GH₵300,000 with two sureties, after lawyer for Esther prayed the court to admit her to bail, since she will not interfere with police investigation.

The facts presented to the court by the prosecuting officer, Chief Inspector John Gohoho, states that the complainant in the case is the Sole Proprietor of Town and Country Books Service.

Esther and Michael, on the other hand, were the complaint’s former Secretary and warehouse keeper respectively.

According to the officer, although Esther resigned from Town and Country Books Service in November 2017, the husband (Enoch) detected that she was continuously dealing with some of the company workers and he became alarmed.

The court was told that Enoch became apprehensive when the wife later informed him that she was going to acquire a shop costing about GH₵35,000.00.

Chief Inspector Gohoho said the husband, without hesitating, notified his wife’s former boss about his suspicions, adding that when the “complainant confronted 1st accused (Esther), she denied [it].”

He said in order for Enoch to confirm his suspicion about his wife, he conducted a search in their room and retrieved some invoice booklets of the company and handed same to the complainant. The prosecutor added that the sole proprietor reported the case to police and Esther, together with Michael, were arrested.

The officer said during investigation, the accused persons admitted to have conspired to steal and succeeded in stealing textbooks worth GH₵20,000.00.

He added that Esther, in the cause of the investigation, refunded an amount of GH₵13, 800.00 to the police.

The prosecutor further said two audits commissioned by the complainant in the last quarter of 2017 showed that within the period, books worth GH₵136,961.25 were allegedly missing.

Chief Inspector Gohoho added that when the duo were confronted with the report, they denied any knowledge of it.

Mrs Asamoah, after hearing both counsel and prosecutor, adjourned the case November 3, 2021.
