A High Court in Accra has today awarded a sum of GH 500,000.00 as damages against the National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC).

Further to the above, a sum of GHC 50, 000 was also awarded as a cost for the plaintiff.

This is a decision of the court in a defamation suit filed by the Manhyia South MP and the current Energy Minister, Matthew Opoku Prempeh against the opposition officer.

Sometime in 2019, the Minister, popularly called NAPO filed this action following some comments made by Mr. Sammy Gyamfi at a press conference addressed in Kumasi in relation to the Kidnapping of the three Canadian girls.

At the said press conference, the NDC communication leader, according to the suit, made an allegation that one Seidu Mba was ‘an errand boy of the MP/ Minister of Energy.”

This didn’t go down well with the minister, who thus filled this action.

After three years, the court in its decision held the statement to be defamatory and thus awarded the above damages in his favor.

Mr. Sammy Gyamfi has meanwhile served notice in a Facebook post of his intention to appeal this decision and fight the matter to its logical conclusion.

“It is worthy of note, that this is only the decision of the court of the first instance and not final. I am determined to pursue this matter to its logical conclusion,” the post states in part.
