An Accra High Court has set bail at GH¢500,000 for Gregory Afoko—Paul Afoko’s younger brother—who faces charges of conspiracy to commit murder. He is accused of working with the convicted Asabke Alangdi in a plot to kill Adams Mahama, a former Upper East Regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party.

Under the bail conditions, two sureties are required, with one meeting specific justification criteria. Afoko’s legal team submitted a new bail application on February 17, 2025. This marks his third attempt to secure bail after spending nearly ten years in detention.

Arrested in 2015, Afoko was charged with conspiring to assassinate Adams Mahama following a violent acid attack outside Mahama’s Bolgatanga residence. The initial trial, which began in 2019 and ended in 2023, resulted in a hung jury on both the murder and conspiracy charges, leading the court to order a retrial. Following this decision, Afoko was taken back into custody and denied bail.

Presiding over the case, Justice Marie-Louise Simmon directed that Afoko must report every two weeks to either the police, the case investigator, or, if unavailable, to the Greater Accra regional crime officer or the Director General of CID until the case is resolved.

The court also stipulated that the registrar verify the authenticity of all submitted documents, confirm Afoko’s residence in Accra, and ensure that the police recognize the proposed sureties.
