The Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Dr. Murtala Mohammed, has assured Ghanaians that steps are underway to revoke Legislative Instrument (LI) 2462, which permitted mining in forest reserves.

The repeal process is set to conclude within the 120-day timeline promised by President John Mahama.

Speaking on Joy FM on Monday, March 17, Dr. Mohammed confirmed that engagements with parliamentary leadership and key stakeholders have already taken place, setting the stage for a swift repeal.

To expedite the process amid ongoing budget discussions, the government opted to bypass a pre-laying stage.

When questioned about whether a state of emergency should be declared due to the devastating impact of illegal mining on water bodies, the Minister deferred the decision to security agencies. However, he reaffirmed the government’s unwavering stance against environmental destruction.

The repeal of LI 2462 is seen as a critical step in addressing environmental concerns and reinforcing the government’s commitment to sustainable resource management.
