Gov’t probes MTN Ghana cybersecurity breach affecting 5,700 customers

The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations has launched a formal investigation into a recent cybersecurity breach that compromised the personal data of nearly 5,700 MTN Ghana subscribers.
The incident, which came to light on April 28, has triggered an urgent response from the ministry in collaboration with the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), the National Communications Authority (NCA), and the Data Protection Commission (DPC).
Together, these bodies are assessing the extent of the breach and working to uncover the root causes and any existing security lapses within the system.
Regulators are also scrutinizing MTN Ghana’s role in the matter to determine whether the telecom giant failed in its duty to protect customer data.
In a public notice, the Ministry reassured citizens that it is taking all appropriate measures to contain the situation and ensure full compliance with Ghana’s data protection laws. Individuals affected by the breach will be contacted directly and provided with guidance and support.
As inquiries continue, the Ministry has urged the public, particularly MTN users, to stay alert while remaining calm. Authorities emphasized that updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
The government reiterated its dedication to strengthening the country’s digital security framework and holding all stakeholders accountable in the face of cyber threats.
