GIMPA Law School Lecturer Dr. Jamal Tonzua Appointed as Acting Deputy Director-General of Ghana’s Cyber Security Authority
Dr. Jamal Tonzua, a lecturer at GIMPA Law School and an expert in cybersecurity law, has been appointed as the Acting Deputy Director-General of Ghana’s Cyber Security Authority. His extensive experience in law, national security, and digital governance is expected to enhance Ghana’s cybersecurity framework and international partnerships.
Dr. Jamal Tonzua, a distinguished lecturer at GIMPA Law School, has been appointed as the Acting Deputy Director-General of Ghana’s Cyber Security Authority (CSA) by President John Dramani Mahama. With a strong background in law, national security, and international relations, Dr. Tonzua is expected to bring valuable expertise to the CSA’s mission of strengthening Ghana’s cybersecurity framework.
The Cyber Security Authority plays a critical role in safeguarding Ghana’s digital space by regulating cybersecurity service providers, managing threats, and promoting a secure and resilient digital ecosystem. Dr. Tonzua’s appointment is seen as a strategic move to enhance international cooperation on cybersecurity and reinforce regulatory policies in the sector.
Beyond academia, Dr. Tonzua has built an impressive career as a government legal advisor, a military staff officer in the Ghana Armed Forces, and a consultant with the United Nations. His experience includes advising Ghana’s Ministry of Defence on international law, human rights, and defence cooperation agreements. He has also contributed to military welfare reforms, UN peacekeeping training, and global cybersecurity initiatives.
Notably, between 2017 and 2023, he played a key role in securing $150 million from the Green Climate Fund for the African Development Bank’s Desert-to-Power Initiative, supporting sustainable energy solutions in Africa. His contributions to international legal discourse, including research on cyberspace governance and transnational crime, have been featured on major global platforms such as the UN International Law Commission.
Dr. Tonzua holds advanced degrees from the University of Oxford, Georgetown Law, and Johns Hopkins SAIS, specialising in international cyber operations. A member of the International Bar Association, he continues to make significant contributions to global discussions on law, security, and digital governance. His appointment marks a significant step in Ghana’s efforts to build a secure and innovative digital future.
