Ghana gov’t committed to advancing rights of minorities – AG tells UN

The Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame has extolled Ghana’s efforts at protecting the fundamental human rights of minority groups.

According to him, the nation Ghana remains committed to the fulfillment of such an obligation per its Constitution, Article 17, and under international human rights laws, to prevent the marginalization of such groups.

Delivering an address at the just ended High-Level Meeting of the UN General Assembly, Mr. Dame thus advocated for the advancement of equal rights sustainable development, etc among member states to enhance the interest of the minority groups.

The meeting, which also was in commemoration of the 13th Anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration on the Rights of Persons belonging to minority groups, also saw the Attorney General highlighting some challenges confronted these rights despite the successes chalked.

Mr. Dame, referring to the COVID-19 pandemic and its effect on nations, advised member states to make deliberate steps to implement measures to enhance emergency aids, data collection for monitoring and tracking disparities against minority groups, etc.

This he further mentioned will require a holistic and comprehensive approach to be able to deal effectively with those discrimination and marginalization.

Moreover, considering the times and the advancement of technology, Mr. Dame suggested the use of helplines, psychosocial support, and dependence on technology to effectively address issues of minorities.

Additionally, Ghana’s Attorney General called on member states to invest in education using the media to champion and advance those rights together with other technology-based solutions to especially reach out to women in minority groups.
