A trader, Joseph Agemba, has been arraigned at the Accra Circuit Court for allegedly defrauding 46 individuals of GH₵1,096,500 by falsely claiming he could secure them jobs in various security agencies in Ghana.
Additionally, Agemba is accused of taking money from two others, promising to arrange U.S. and German visas, as well as funds from a complainant, Patience Solomon, to procure an auctioned car. None of these promises were fulfilled.
Agemba, who claimed to be a National Security Operative at the Jubilee House, is facing seven charges of defrauding by false pretenses. The court, however, did not take his plea, as the prosecution, led by Chief Jonas Lawer on behalf of ASP Richard Amoah, revealed that more victims were still coming forward to report the case. The court, presided over by Mr. Isaac Addo, remanded the accused into police custody to prevent interference with investigations. The next hearing is scheduled for December 27, 2024.
The prosecution explained that Agemba first approached Immigration Officer Patience Solomon in November 2023, claiming he had access to "protocol slots" for recruitment into security services. After her husband recommended Agemba, Solomon reached out, and Agemba confirmed his ability to assist for fees ranging between GH₵7,000 and GH₵22,000 per person. Solomon, trusting his claims, encouraged others to participate, and together they transferred a total of GH₵1,931,000 to six different mobile accounts for the promised recruitments.
In addition to the recruitment scam, Agemba reportedly collected GH₵54,000 from Solomon for an auctioned car and GH₵87,000 from two individuals for visas, none of which materialized. Realizing the promises were not being honored, Solomon reported the matter to the police, leading to Agemba's arrest. Investigations are ongoing.
