The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has detained a man identified as Alex Cobbinah after a viral video surfaced in which he falsely claimed to be a soldier.
In the video, Cobbinah was seen wearing a Ghana Navy vest and displaying military items, making allegations that President-elect John Dramani Mahama intended to dismiss soldiers who had been recruited into the GAF through protocol arrangements.
According to a statement released by GAF on Tuesday, December 17, investigations uncovered that Cobbinah had shared several videos on social media, portraying himself as a military officer and using official military gear.
Following a detailed investigation, the Military Police tracked and arrested Cobbinah at Madina Zongo Junction in Accra. He was subsequently handed over to the Ghana Police Service for further investigation and possible prosecution.
GAF emphasized that this arrest serves as a warning to deter others from engaging in impersonation or recruitment fraud. They reaffirmed their strict stance against such activities.
The statement also cautioned the public against paying money to individuals or agents in hopes of gaining entry into the armed forces, emphasizing that such actions are also fraudulent. It referenced the National Liberation Council Decree (NLCD) 177 of 1967, which prohibits non-military personnel from wearing or using military uniforms, equipment, or accessories.
GAF urged citizens to report any unauthorized use of military uniforms or fraudulent recruitment schemes to the nearest military base or police station. They stated that this measure is essential for ensuring public safety and upholding the integrity of the armed forces.
