The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it is investigating the alleged possession of Ghanaian passports by foreign nationals in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the other Gulf States.

In a statement on Friday, MoFA said it had been prompted by circulated videos on social media regarding the matter.

According to reports, a woman in one of the videos alleged that some Nigerians living in Dubai paid passport office officials GH¢20,000 to obtain Ghanaian Passports.

She further claimed that foreigners who get the passports had learned how to speak some basic sentences in Twi as proof that they are Ghanaians and they were using the identity to “commit crimes.”

“The Ministry is investigating the said allegation and would take appropriate measures to deal with the situation if found to be true,” the statement noted.

Although it is unlawful for foreign nationals to own a Ghanaian passport, the ministry said there have been instances where in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, they have apprehended individuals for attempting to acquire Ghanaian passports.

“The Ministry however wishes to caution against unfounded claims on social media concerning foreigners’ acquiring Ghanaian passports. Individuals with credible evidence on foreign nationals in possession of our passports are to approach the Ministry for further action by the law enforcement agencies.”
