Five arrested after Tamale man reports alleged abduction, ransom demand
Police say the arrests were made by the Northern Regional Special Operations Team, popularly known as Red Maria.
A complaint over a seized motorbike and a demand for GH¢15,000 has led to the arrest of five men in Tamale.
The men are accused of unlawfully detaining a man, taking him to a base at Aboabo, seizing his property and later demanding money before releasing one of the items.
Police say the arrests were made by the Northern Regional Special Operations Team, popularly known as Red Maria.
The alleged victim told police that the incident started at Aboabo and later extended to Kalpohin.
According to him, the suspects first held him without lawful authority and took him to their base.
He claimed they later went to his room and took away his mobile phone, a Yamaha motorbike, five sachets of suspected tramadol and about GH¢28,000 in cash.
The complainant said he was released the next morning.
His ordeal, however, allegedly continued when the suspects demanded GH¢15,000 before they would return his motorbike.
Police acted on the report and traced the five suspects.
During the operation, officers recovered the Yamaha motorbike, GH¢12,273 in cash and five sachets of suspected 250mg tramadol.
The suspects, together with the recovered items, have been handed over to the Criminal Investigations Department.
Police say the CID will continue investigations and prefer charges against the suspects when the process is completed.
