Five men accused of masquerading as members of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) have been granted bail by the Kyebi District Court in the Eastern Region.
The court admitted each of the accused to bail with two sureties, who must be salaried workers earning between GH¢3,000 and GH¢4,000 a month.
Presenting the facts, Detective Chief Inspector Kamal Salifu Gumah of the Eastern South Legal Prosecution Unit told the court that the men allegedly went to Akyem Potrase in the Abuakwa South Municipality pretending to be NAIMOS officials and used that false status to extort money.
Prosecutors say one of the accused is alleged to have collected GH¢1,400 from two victims under threat.
All five pleaded not guilty to four counts, including:
Conspiracy to commit crime, contrary to sections 23 and 15(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29)
Extortion, contrary to section 15(1) of Act 29
Conspiracy to commit crime
Falsely pretending to be public officers, contrary to section 237 of Act 29
Lawyers for the accused applied for bail, which was granted by the court subject to the surety conditions.
The case has been adjourned to 9 February 2026 for a case management conference.
